LAWRENCE TECH / SIA COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK

This is a collaboration between the Lawrence Tech University College of Architecture and Design and the Schoolcraft Improvement Association. This collaboration will provide the Schoolcraft Community with an exciting and innovative urban architectural framework to initiate and “build more beauty” in the Community. It is being led by Dr. Joongsub Kim, LTU Professor of Architecture with his current class of graduate architect students, and SIA Vice President George Perdue. This framework promises to energize and revitalize the community to the extent that passersby will exclaim: “I want to live there!”

RIPPLING HOPE

Rippling Hope is a ministry that provides volunteers a variety of mission and service opportunities and promotes conversation and relationships between neighbors of diverse cultures. The SIA has partnered with Rippling Hope for many years and provided many of its senior residents with much needed home repair services. Rev. Carl Zerweck serves as the current CEO of Rippling Hope.

DOSSIN ELMENTARY/MIDDLE SCHOOL

Dossin Elementary/Middle School has served as the meeting space for SIA’s community membership meetings as well as its Annual Holiday Social Potluck. Through the years the SIA membership has volunteered and partnered with Dossin and many residents have assisted Dossin’s principals and staff with various daytime student events and lunch hour monitoring. As Dossin principal Mr. Kurtis Brown has said many times; “an extra set of eyes is always welcome here at the school.”

GLENDALE GARDENS

A community garden initiative that was created in 2012 by residents of the Schoolcraft community. It serves as a space for community sharing, meetings, horticultural learning, and the site of Jazz in The Garden, the SIA’s signature annual event. In 2016, Glendale Gardens was presented the Detroit Community Development award by the Masco Corporation. The Garden has been faithfully and passionately maintained by residents Joyce Dobbs, Martha Lathan, and Tanya Pittman for several years.
