ABOUT SIA

The Schoolcraft Improvement Association, Inc. (SIA), was organized in 1992. A small group of residents from surrounding block clubs in the neighborhood decided to join together to make improvements and serve the community. The SIA was incorporated by the State of Michigan on July 22, 1992

.

The Schoolcraft Improvement Association is a neighborhood organization located on the west side of Detroit bounded by Schoolcraft on the north, Fullerton on the south, Greenfield on the east, and Southfield on the west. About 300homes are served by the organization. The SIA strives to encourage and promote neighborhood participation of its residents for the maintenance, improvement, and sustainability of the neighborhood from block to block.

MISSION

The SIA’s Mission is to engage neighbors and businesses, advance neighborhood unity, and initiate quality of life improvements. In particular, the SIA will always recognize the values, interests, and desire of its residents to enhance and preserve the physical environment and historical characteristics of the community including its houses, commercial buildings, vacant land, and parks. The SIA actively seeks the participation of supporters and volunteers to help make the community a more desirable and attractive place in which to work and live.

PAST LEADERSHIP

SIA Presidents who have served the SIA are:

Mr. Robert Jones – Mr. Jones Incorporated the SIA in 1992.

Mr. Eugene Owens – 2008-2010. Mr. Owens is currently the Vice President of the Montford Point Detachment #158 of the Marine Corp League.

Mr. Bryan Ferguson - 2010-2021. 

Ms. Aminah Steger – 2021-2023. Resident and acting president of Rutland 30 Block Club.

Mr. George Perdue – 2023-Present.

AFFILIATIONS & ACCOMPLISHMENTS

The SIA is actively involved with the Detroit Police Dept. 6th Precinct Community Relations Council as well as well as surrounding neighborhood associations including Grandmont Community Association, Grandmont 1 Community Association, Rosedale Park Improvement Association, and North Rosedale Park Civic Association.  The SIA participates in annual Detroit City-wide activities such as Rippling Hope, Motor City Makeover and many other city initiatives. The SIA is in a community partnership with Dossin School where Kurtis Brown is the Principal and John Winston is the Assistant principal.

SIA accomplishments over the years have included awarding scholarships to graduating high school students, home repair funding to homeowners in need, kids fun-day, blight control, construction of the Dossin School baseball field, Glendale Gardens (community garden), and partnerships with local community businesses.
